Communities: Empire

Empire is one of Clear Creek County’s hidden jewels. Located just off of I-70 on U.S. Highway 40 at the base of Berthoud Pass, Empire’s ideal location in a sunny star-shaped valley, traversed by Clear Creek, makes it a great base for mountain living, providing adventures, refreshing tranquility, or a mix of both. Empire began as a gold mining camp in the 1860’s and was called Valley City until 1882, when it was incorporated as the Town of Empire. Bands of Ute Indians were the first to enjoy this “Valley of Big Timber” where their ceremonial camping grounds existed. The Victorian Inn here is the oldest continually operating hotel in Colorado and luminaries such as Ulysses S. Grant and P.T. Barnum made it their Colorado home. Surrounded by stately evergreens and towering mountains, you can experience the thrill of snowshoeing in a pristine valley, angling for the elusive trout in numerous lakes, exploring the back country on 4-wheel-drive roads, and also shopping in unique boutiques for stained glass, artwork, and antiques. Empire is just 35 minutes from world class skiing at Winter Park and Mary Jane. Although the Ute Indians and gold miners are gone, Empire has retained its charm of old and you can make Empire your home! www.clearcreekcounty.org
