Communities: Conifer

This mountain area of Jefferson County was the summer hunting area and campground for Ute, Sioux, and Arapahoe Indians, and also provided a livelihood for fur trappers. Then in 1859 gold was discovered and Conifer was originally settled as a ranching community. The stage and freight stops for the wagon trains, moving on with supplies to the gold fields deep in the Colorado Rockies, led to the first roads being built in the area. Soon, logging became a principle industry along with raising cattle. Homesteaders were drawn to the area because of its majestic scenery, abundant wildlife, climate, excellent water, plentiful supplies of wood and good open meadows for cattle grazing.

The area designated as “Conifer”, so named after the large, beautiful trees which grow here, also encompasses several other nearby mountain communities, including Bailey and Pine to the west. Just a few miles south of Evergreen and about 35 miles southwest of Denver, this area of about 100 square miles is a quaint and friendly unincorporated area, with small enclaves of homes tucked into the canyons of the Denver foothills.

Here residents enjoy a unique mountain lifestyle – combining the best of the serenity and beauty of the forested hills along with easy access to the shopping, employment opportunities, major sports activities, and cultural offerings of the city. Nearby are secluded areas for hiking and picnics, sailing or fishing, skiing or ice skating, and residents share their backyards with grazing elk, foxes and other wildlife, chipmunks, squirrels, and a multitude of birds. In spring and summer, the meadows become a sea of color from the blooming native wild flowers. In fall, the aspen turn the hillsides golden and winter brings brilliant mornings of crystalline powder and views of nearby snow-capped peaks.

The clean, fresh air and more than 300 days of sunshine a year attract a wide variety of homeowners. They range from airline pilots to construction works, from corporate executives to small entrepreneurs, all tied with a common bond . . .

They have all chosen to make the satisfying Conifer lifestyle their very own.
